3D Wafate printer

Designer/artist: Afate Kodjo Gnikou

Year: 2013

Description: The W.Afate printer is a home-brewed replica of the popular Prusal Mendel fabricator, however instead of using parts purchased in stores, the W.Afate is constructed from discarded electronic waste gathered from old computers, printers, and scanners found in African electronics dumping grounds.

About the designer: Afate Kodjo Gnikou is a Lome-based inventor working in the Togolese maker space ‘Woelab – Africa’s first space for democratic technology’. Afate compares the potential impact of 3-D printing on society to that of the steam engine in the 19th century.
