December 2021: Book chapter

The Sartists’ depiction of post-subculture in Johannesburg. In Pinther K, Ndjio B and Kastner K (eds) Fashionscapes, Bloomsbury Publishing

This chapter explores the idea of cultural sustainability through the work and ideas of a Johannesburg-based fashion collective, The Sartists. This group is comprised of fashion designers Wanda Lephoto and Kabelo Kungwane, art director Ricky Kunene (aka Xzavier Zulu) and photographer Andile Buka. Their work makes an explicit argument for remembering black South African fashion cultures and subcultures that went largely undocumented during the apartheid era. Their work stands as a protest against forgetting.
